The Way I Work

The way I work is for us to explore together your experience of living your life so that gradually we can uncover what it is that is causing you distress. Sometimes, just being listened to without fear of judgement, of being told what to do, or any other intrusive demands can be a very healing and empowering experience. I offer a safe and confidential space for you to be yourself.

I will facilitate and support you in your self-exploration, enabling a deeper understanding which gives you the choice to live your life differently and in a more satisfying way. At times we live our lives without ever questioning our feelings, values and assumptions, and what has served us well in the past may no longer be working in our lives currently. Therapy gives you the chance to re-examine these key areas and gain a different perspective which often brings clarity and relief.

I have trained in psychodynamic (inner conflict, repression and childhood experiences), integrative (a combination of two or more theories) and existential (see below) psychotherapeutic approaches and have also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (changing the way you think and behave). My favoured approach is existential, which is informed by philosophy but basically means an appreciation of the problems of living. Each encounter with a client is unique and I do not impose a set model or theory but rather draw on whatever suits a particular individual.

There is no technique, just a conversation between two people that is honest and exploratory as well as caring and respectful.

Psychotherapy sessions last for 50 minutes and are regular weekly appointments. For some people as little as four sessions can be enough to give them the insight and confidence they need to go on with their lives. Other people need longer to tell their story and reach understanding.
